Acupuncture is a branch of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The oldest known written reference to acupuncture dates back to the second century BC. Acupuncture is based on the doctrine of yin and yang, which was later supplemented by the five-element theory and the doctrine of the meridians.
The insertion of needles changes the flow of Qi (life energy) in various energy pathways (meridians). Disruptions in the flow of vital energy can manifest themselves in an abundance or weakness of the energy flow in the organ systems and meridians, up to a blockage or stagnation of the Qi.
The consequences of these energetic blockages are usually states of fullness in the form of muscle tension, muscle pain, corresponding movement restrictions, headaches and complaints of the internal organs. Acupuncture attempts to restore an energy balance. Yin and Yang should be brought into balance.
Trigger point acupuncture & dry needling
A special form of acupuncture is trigger point acupuncture and dry needling, which relaxes painful, tense muscles.
Duration of treatment
The acupuncture treatment lasts 15 to 30 minutes. The patient relaxes on the couch.
Are there any side effects?
Very rarely, there may be a small haematoma in the needle insertion area or brief circulatory reactions. Sterile disposable needles made of stainless steel are used to prevent infections.
